Tax-Free Holiday
4/22/08
UPDATE: The dates for the Sales Tax Holiday have been decided - August 2-8
It's three days shorter and a few items are excluded from exemption this year.
Included: Clothing, wallets, backpacks, handbags, fanny packs, diaper bags; school supplies (pens, pencils, erasers, crayons, notebooks, legal pads, binders, lunch boxes, folders, computer disks, calculators).
Excluded: Books, briefcases, suitcases, watches, jewelry, and umbrellas.
While we'll still get a Tax-Free Holiday, it won't be as long, or include as many items this year.
State Legislators trimmed the Holiday from 10 days to 7, and books are off the list. Also wiped out, the Hurricane supply tax holiday.
No date has been decided for the Tax-Free Holiday, but you can expect it to be sometime in early August.

Kids Fest at Miracle Theatre
The 13th Annual National Children's Theatre Festival, or Kids Fest, will happen next weekend, April 26th & 27th. It's an entire weekend of theatre frolic for kids and their families at the Miracle Theatre in Coral Gables. A special Kids Fest treat will be a performance by 7-year-old piano virtuoso Ethan Bortnick. Ethan, who is able to play 200 songs by heart and has perfect pitch, will perform Saturday, April 26th at noon. Ethan is a South Florida resident who taught himself how to play the piano at the age of three because he says, "I just like playing piano... it's not that hard". From the mouths of babes...
Kids Fest also features the Actors' Playhouse Passport Stations which include:
Painting Your Own Masterpiece
Making Your Own Puppet
Designing A Costume of a Mask
Dressing up as a Funny Character
Acting on Camera
Singing Your Heart out on their 'Gables Idol' Stage
Special Backstage Tour
Sounds like a good time for the drama queen or king in your life, no?

Help clear our sphere
It's Earth Month, indeed!
You can recycle a whole lot more than paper and plastic!
You can donate your old prescription eyeglasses at any Lenscrafter, Pearle Vision, Sears Optical, Target Optical, or Sunglass Hut.
Give the outdated cell phone back to the store from which you bought it, donate it to a shelter, or try a Best Buy or Office Depot in-store recycling kiosk. Also, Motorola has a free mail-back program.
Yes, even your old (smelly?) sneakers can be donated for recycling. Your kicks can help create playground flooring!
iPOds can be brought to an Apple Store or donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. You can also donate all MP3 players to eBay Giving Works.
For computers try the National Cristina Foundation as well as Dell and Hewlett-Packard recycling programs.
If it's DVD's, TV's, and stereos you aim to recycle, try a donation to the Miami Rescue Mission.
You can even peruse the Freecycle Network, whereby you can give and get stuff for free within your town, thereby avoiding throwing things away. Remember: One man's trash is another man's treasure.
Make sure you don't trash hazardous items, like paint, cleaners, fluorescent bulbs, fertilizer, etc.
You can find places near you that will either recycle or dispose of the gunk safely.
On behalf of the Planet Earth, thanks!!

Water restriction eased
This Friday, April 18th, you will be able to begin twice-weekly watering - that is, unless you live in Hallandale Beach, Dania Beach, Lantana, or Lake Worth; you will still be under the once-a-week watering rules.
The new rules:
Odd addresses: Wednesday and Saturday, either between midnight and 10am, or 4 and 11:59pm
Even addresses: Thursday and Sunday, either between midnight and 10am, or 4 and 11:59pm
We are still considered to be in a drought, and the South Florida Water Management district intends to make the twice-weekly restrictions permanent.

Shocking women work stats
I found this little blurb in Redbook Magazine and was somewhat floored by the stats.
Here's what I read: Shockingly, American women don't have most of the basic protections that women in the rest of the world count on: Out of 177 countries surveyed, 169 offer paid maternity leave, 145 guarantee paid sick days, 137 mandate paid vacation, 107 allow working moms breast-feeding breaks, and 66 ensure that dads have the right to paid paternity leave. The United States guarantees none of these protections! Think these benefits don't make economic sense? Well, of the 10 countries with the most competitive economies, the United States is the only one with fewer than 10 guaranteed sick days. How many do we offer? Yep - zero.
If you'd like to know the best companies for which to work, CNN Money put out their annual list, and there was a South Florida company on that list; Baptist Health, Coral Gables.
