    Beauty and the beak

Plastic surgery's for the birds... really! Beauty, a 7-year-old bald eagle, had part of her beak shot off, rendering her unable to hunt food.
This week, a nylon-composite beak will be glued onto Beauty. She still won't be able to tear flush (ew!), but it will help her drink, grip, and eat.

It's not the first time a prosthetic beak has been attached to an eagle, but there is still the question as to whether the bionic beak will function properly.

Kudos to the team trying to help Beauty, and to the U.S.A.'s National Symbol herself...

    Carly comes clean

When Carly Simon performs at the Gusman this Friday, it will be the first time she's performed a concert in Miami. Her son, Ben, will play guitar and assist on vocals. The very next night is the premiere of Romulus Hunt, A Family Opera by Carly Simon, also at the Gusman Center. The opera deals will a 12-year-old boy and the effect his parent's divorce has on him. For information try 305-779-9706

    Here's some Carly trivia:

Did you know Carly's dad was Richard Simon, co-founder of Simon & Schuster publishing house?
Did you know Carly sold the secret of 'You're So Vain' to NBC sports president Dick Ebersol for $50,000?
Did you know Mick Jagger sings the backing vocals for 'You're So Vain'?
Did you know Carly suffers from severe stagefright?
Did you know that both of the men Carly married have the same first name?

    Kids safer in the middle

Another study has proven that kids in a safety seat in the center of a vehicle's back seat is the safest place for them to be. It's also a far easier position to be poked by siblings, and prime rear-view mirror position to see the screams of "Are we there, yet?" and "I want to get ooouttttt nooowwww".

    What's in a last name?

It's a long honored tradition for the woman to take the man's last name upon wedding. A couple years back, Michael Buday decided to buck tradition and take his wife's last name, Bijon. He found this was not as easy as it sounded. Instead of the traditional $50-$80, it would cost Michael $300, a court appearance, petition filing, and a four-week advertisement of the name change in a local newspaper. If Michael had decided to use both names, or if the couple had kept their respective names, that would have been no problem.
After two years, a lawsuit alleging sex discrimination and a change in California law, Michael Bijon picked up his new drivers license on Monday.
Only 6 states allow a man to change his name through marriage with the same ease as a woman can... and now we can add California.
I hope the other 43 States with unequal name change laws for people getting married, get with the 2008 program!! This means you, FLORIDA!!
