When I first saw the video, the accident was horrifying enough; then, to see that no one helped this man, is stunning. In Hartford, Connecticut, 78-year-old Angel Arce Torres was sideswiped by one car and then full-on hit by another. A streetlight surveillance camera caught some of our fellow human beings doing nothing to help an elderly man lying in the street, critically wounded.
Four people did call 911 within a minute of the hit-and-run, but no one went over to the man to even try to comfort him. Mr. Torres is in critical condition, paralyzed from the neck down.
I realize we have to be wary of our surroundings and take precautions in our daily life, but imagine if this were your dad or grandfather.
If you choose to view the video, be warned: it's terrible and it's graphic. However, I hope you think of it less as voyeurism and more of a humanity check; a reminder that we all need to reach out now and again. Consider me slapped upside the head on this one...
